I bowl in a leauge with 100% of 230 handicap. Last week the team we bowled had a bowler with a 165 avg(w/65 pins hdcp) that quit the leauge so before our match started the secretary put in a vacancy of 160 but did not change the handicap to 70 pins. In the 1st game I needed just 2 pins to win the game so I threw it down the middle & got 7 pins to win by 5 pins. Now the new standings came out & see that we tied that game because the other team should have gotten an extra 5 pins per game but if I had known I needed 8 pins rather than 3 to win I would have bowled it different. Does this seem fair?

It is the Sec.'s job to go over every recap sheet each week and make sure it is correct.  If they find an error they must correct it.  It is every team Capt. to check before and see if the H\C is correct.  Seems very fair.  Next time try for a strike and be sure you have enough.  Rules are rules.

Does this seem fair?

Looking at USBC Rules

Rule 116 – Scores
116a. Scoring Process
6. Errors in scoring or calculation must be corrected by a league officer immediately upon discovery.
Any questionable errors in scoring or calculation shall be decided by the league board.

Commonly Asked Questions – Rule 116a.
116a/1 Does the league board have to meet before an error can be corrected?
When an obvious error is to be corrected, a directive from the board is not necessary; a
league officer is authorized to make changes. However, Rule 116a, Item 6 states, the board of
directors decides on questionable errors in scoring or calculation.
116a/2 Is there a time limit for correcting errors in scoring or calculation?
Corrections may be made until the prizes are distributed. The 15-day time limit of Rule 119
 does not apply.
116a/3 Can an error on a score sheet or recap sheet be corrected after the team captains have
 signed the recap sheet?
Yes. Although Rule 104a, Item 5, and Rule 116a, Item 5, require the captains to sign the
recap sheet and verify the scores bowled, their signatures do not prevent a score from being
corrected. An officer is required by Rule 116a, Item 6, to correct errors if they are found after
the captains have signed the recap sheets. Both captains should be notified of the corrections.

Then yes it appears to be fair, It was a obvious error.

This is why it's important for captains to check when changes are made to lineups/handicap/averages etc. before the start of play that things are correct and to verify the scores on the recap sheet before signing and turning it in.

Also if you knew the handicap was wrong at the very start and didn't say anything about it.

It would mean you knew the other team wasn't getting it's full handicap and you were trying to benefit from the mistake.

Then yes it would be fair .
