If you want to see how low scores were at the 2015 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships in El Paso, you can gain some perspective from looking at scores over the past several years.

At the bottom of this story is a listing of scores for first, 50th, 100th and 150th (where available) going back to 2000.

It is important to note that these scores are apples and oranges for many of the years: team event has been all fresh oil starting in 2003 and minors all fresh oil starting in 2013.

That means any scores from years before that in those categories and for all-events really aren’t fair comparisons.

(I didn’t include team all-events because totals are not readily accessible beyond the winning scores.)

And, of course, there have been all the changes in balls, lane oils, lane surfaces, lane machines, etc.

But it does give you a good sense of scores in general that show how tough the conditions were this year, as I said they would be in this blog when the patterns were announced.

The only score that was higher in any category (again, not counting team all-events) for any year since 2005 was Matt McNiel’s gigantic 2.226 all-events.

Otherwise, this year was the lowest scoring year since 2005 across the board.

Bravo for USBC this year and here’s hoping USBC continues with tough conditions at least close to this year going forward. It’s the way national champions should be decided.

Open Championship scores going back to 2005 can be found here.

If you want to try to view 2000-2004 results, click this archive link, then in the search field type "abctournament.com". A calendar will display with banner of years and then click one of those years in the banner and it will update the calendar and just click a highlighted "circle" date after close of the tourney, suggest mid-July or later, and it will redirect you to that old webpage of tourney info and results. Go back to Calendar and click other years and do same for those results.

I am not guaranteeing this will work for all users!

I bowled last year, shot 1710, felt like they were tough, and was amazed anyone thought they were soft. This year...they were TOUGH.
