Next Up on CBS Sports Network: Bill O’Neill Earns No. 1 Berth for King of the Swing Finals

by Bill Vint June 18, 2015 02:54

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., will make his eighth Oklahoma’s Grand Casino Hotel & Resort PBA Summer Swing television appearance out of 10 possible shows over a span of two years Tuesday night when he tries for a repeat as the No. 1 qualifier in the Oklahoma’s Grand Casino King of the Swing special event that will conclude the 2015 Summer Swing on CBS Sports Network. The show will air at 9 p.m. ET.

After dominating the 2014 Oklahoma’s Grand Casino Hotel & Resort PBA Summer Swing when he won the King of the Swing and the Badger Open as well as finishing third in the Bear Open and fourth in the Oklahoma Open, O’Neill repeated that performance in 2015. He finished third in both the Wolf and Bear Opens before winning the Oklahoma Open, and by virtue of his overall performance, earned the top berth for the King of the Swing stepladder finals.

The King of the Swing, a special event that does not award a PBA Tour title to the winner, will be contested on a special two-lane installation in the Grand Casino Event Center on a dual lane condition – the short 32-foot Wolf oiling pattern on one lane and the long 52-foot Badger pattern on the other.

Rounding out the stepladder field will be Bear Open winner Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C.; Badger Open winner Ronnie Russell of Marion, Ind.; Wolf Open winner Kyle Troup of Taylorsville, N.C., and “wild card” selection Jason Belmonte of Australia, who earned his berth based on total Summer Swing points without winning a title.

No. 5 Belmonte will bowl No. 4 Troup in the opening match. The winner will meet No. 3 Russell in match two. No. 2 Jones will meet the Russell-match one winner in the semifinal match.

O’Neill won the 2014 King of the Swing title with a 245-181 victory over Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill.
