Finally threw my ugly white quantum in league yesterday...well, shot 744. Guess that thing works after all.

I've been stubbornly using it for the last 4 league sessions with minimal success. Case in point, after shooting 171 with the Abyss last night I finally switched to my Motiv Jackal LE for games 2 and 3 and shot 233 and 245. Nice back end and I didn't have to force anything. Series total ended up being 649. Not bad considering my start.

I hate to say anything bad about the Abyss, but I'm not seeing what others say it should do. I'm having the wife drop it off at the pro shop Thursday and possibly having it plugged and redrilled. The current layout is just not working for me.

We took 6 of 8 points. Guess which game we lost?

Hey Ed
Isn’t the Abyss way too much ball for you to be using on a house shot? Seems (at box finish) to need long/heavy oil to be good. On anything else, it might just burn off too much energy too soon.
That’s one of the strongest (earliest, grabbiest, most aggressive) balls available.
My pro shop guy said, to him, it’s like my Kingpin Max. Just too much for a house shot...and even when it is useful on something other than heavy/long, it burns it’s own track on the lane, making it a “5-frame” ball. 🤷‍♂️
Probably not telling you anything you don’t already know, but the Abyss has some serious snow tires on it.

We're different than Ed, Dennis. He's really good...we're just really old. [frown]

You should just do what I do...have 8 balls, so when we bowl like crap we can just say we were using the wrong ball. [biggrin]

I have been terrible so far the season.  Some kind of new oil that is supposed to hold up better.  Add to that it is 44' and I suck.  Mostly 10 pins and a bunch of 2-8-10's.  Even Ernie was playing down and in imagine that.  Sore hamstring doesn't help either.  Was told it was from the old scar tissue.  Other than that life is great.[biggrin]

This season has been dreadful.  I'd like to blame the new oiling machine for my horrendous 470 last night but part of it has to be me.  Brought three balls (polished urethane, dull urethane, resin) and couldn't get any of them to work no matter what I did.  Played inside, played outside, sped up, slowed down, different hand positions.  Ball either came up light and washed out or came up high and left a split.  Mechanic subbed on my team last night so he got to see up close what was going on.  Kept saying the oil still wasn't correct on the left side and that he was going to continue adjusting the machine until he got it right.  There weren't any other lefties in the league last night so I have no idea if it's me or if the machine really needs more adjustment.  Irregardless of the reasons, I feel like a complete POS for averaging 210 last season and not being able to hit 500 the first three weeks of this season.

Righties were killing it last night.  Guy on my pair shot 778.

I've been invited in either tonight or tomorrow to practice on the new pattern as much as I want.  They desperately want the averages to go up to put an end to the sport shot rerate crap that's been going on, but it doesn't help when all of their high average lefties are 40-50 pins under average from last season.

Well, I sent the Abyss back to the pro shop. Going to change it from pin down to pin up. See if I can get more length and retain some power for the back end turn. We'll see. I've used Jackal's on house shots just fine. If the Abyss is that much stronger, you may be right.

I have been bowling over all better lately. Last night using the Jackal LE: 238 - 234 - 200 = 672.

In all 3 leagues, the average is now over 200 so I'm going in the right direction. Hopefully, I can get them all over 210 by the end of the season.

Used the Motiv Trident Abyss after getting it redrilled. Went from a pin down drilling, that did nothing for me, to a pin up drilling.

Then this happened....

Scores: 247 - 236 - 246 = 729.

I like it. Raised the average 7 pins.

Well, tonight was an interesting night.  I've whined for years on the forums about how difficult the shot at my home center (Parkview Bowl) is.  This year they bought an oiling machine and I've struggled badly trying to figure out how to play the new shot.  Went practicing last Friday and figured out what I needed to do.

So tonight I start out with my original Faball Black Hammer, as that ball worked great in practice last Friday.  First game, couldn't carry anything, had one strike, shot 155.

I then switched to my Faball Blue Hammer and promptly shot 299.  Came up light on the last ball, blew a ton of pins towards the 6-10 (I'm a lefty)...the 6 fell, the 10 didn't.

Third game, 7 strikes and 3 opens (including a 6-8 in the 10th).  Shot 199.  The other lefty in the league shot 300 the 3rd game for a 767 series.  His righty brother shot 770 last week.

So I guess this is the new reality for my league...the shot is now pretty easy once you know what it is.  The center's never had an 800 series bowled in it in its 78 year history...no way that doesn't change this season, and I think it'll make me sad that it finally happens only because the shot was made easier.

On the plus side since the USBC now considers us a sport shot league, the other lefty now has an official USBC sport shot 300, and I have a sport shot 299.  😃

Finally shot 600 on Wednesday.  202, 198, 212.  My son shot: 102, 94, 123.  I finally figured out this week how to play the lanes.  My ball speed was the key issue for the first few weeks of miserable bowling. I know now what to do; however, it's easier said than done.  We shall see....

I've always hated it when centers go that route, creating 'easy' scoring shots to try and bring in more bowlers.  A friend recently moved from our area in eastern WA to the Seattle area. I bowled with him for 2 seasons and he averaged from 190's to 210 range.  His first season on the west side he threw 9 300 games in league. He said the shot was ridiculously easy.  Makes a sham of the sport IMO.

Last week my bowling was like a yo-yo.  Normal nights for me are Tue and Thurs, but I subbed Wed last week.

Tues shot a 628

Wed threw my Quantum Bias and shot 744.

Thurs I couldn't do anything right....shot 173, 172, 168.  Missed 6 single pin spares... =0

This week Tues 620, Thurs 658.

Our house starts off at 37' then every 8 weeks moves it 2' longer. Tues/Wed is house shot and Thurs is a challenge (flatter version of the house).  Tues I put 2k on my bias, didn't care for the reaction as I had a hard time carrying the corners. Thurs I just brought my older equipment to see how it was reacting. Fun to experiment.

I've spent many hrs watching bowling from current to the B/W stuff. I find it very interesting to see the different styles, watch how they transition to the oil, etc.   You can learn a lot if your really watching.  (maybe I'm just a bowling nerd)   =)
