When do you know a ball has "worn" out?

I think my virtual gravity might be on its way out. The last 2 weeks, I've had an unusal rash of solid 7 pins. So I thought, huh, perhaps the ball has reached the end. I used it again last night, out of the first 13 frames, I had 7 solid 7 pins. I was making proper adjustments on the lane, and with my feet to try to adjust for this. Made a ball change to something less agressive, and different surface, and I proceeded to start striking.

It could just be me, but the question remains, is when do you know a ball is lost it's performance?

Forum: General bowling discussion

Boy, it's been awhile/spare shooting

Hey there, everyone. I doubt any of you remember me, so I won't update you on my entire life apart from saying I'm still bowling, though with little success. I'm still a mid-100s bowler, but I'm always trying to get better.

Anyway, I wanted to ask you guys about a spare shooting technique I've been experimenting with. I've read that shooting with two fingers instead of three will improve your accuracy. I've had a bit of success with this, but I wanted to ask your guys opinion on this since many of you are much more experienced and talented than I am.

If you don't think that will work, please offer some pointers. For your own reference, I am a down-and-in bowler. My strike ball usually lays down right around the tenth board and, if I'm doing what I'm supposed to, it will hook ever so slightly at the back end of the lane into the 1-3 pocket.

Forum: General bowling discussion

pba bowling pins

I watch the pba telecast every week. I have noticed that the pins seem to fall over with very little effort. I know they have a set weight that is pretty close to the local center. Is there any difference between the pba pins and your local center. I never see a pin slide off spot on tv. At the local center it will happen at least once a week on my pair where a pin will slide 4-5 inches off spot the pba pins just fall over. Any thing to it or is it my imagination?

Forum: General bowling discussion

Don Johnson Eliminator TV Show --- Who do you want to see on TV?

Each group has 4 bowlers. In each of the 3 eliminator rounds, the bowler with the lowest 3 game total is eliminated. In Sunday's finals, the bowler with the lowest game in each round is eliminated.
I love the format, it seems like a glorified pot game.

Who do you want to see on TV of the 4 groups? Who do you want to see win the championship?

SATURDAYS ELIMINATOR ROUND PAIRINGS

Group A: Sean Rash, Wichita, Kan.; Brad Angelo, Lockport, N.Y.; Ryan Shafer, Horseheads, N.Y., and Osku Palermaa, Finland.

Group B: Tommy Jones, Simpsonville, S.C.; Mike Fagan, Patchogue, N.Y.; Steve Harman, Indianapolis, and Wes Malott, Pflugerville, Texas.

Group C: Michael Haugen Jr., Carefree, Ariz.; Mika Koivuniemi, Hartland, Mich.; Brian Kretzer, Dayton, Ohio, and Mike DeVaney, San Diego.

Group D: Bill ONeill, Southampton, Pa.; Mike Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas; Joe Bailey, Doylestown, Ohio, and Andres Gomez, Colombia.

Forum: General bowling discussion

Bowling Champ Does His Homework

Even though Tim Voss is the proprietor of the Sequoia Pro Bowl, for a week in each of the past two years, Chris Barnes has owned the place.

The 40-year-old right-hander from Double Oak, Texas, intends to lay claim to it again this week as the Don Johnson Eliminator begins this morning in the 32-lane facility on the North Side.

"I've got no negative memories of this place at all," said Barnes, two-time defending champion of the PBA event, after a practice session yesterday. "I've bowled here twice and I've been the benefactor of some really good fortune here both years. It seems like if I needed something good to happen here, it happened.

"There's probably not going to be many chances in my career, in fact, this might be the only time, where I have a chance to win at a place three years in a row. I'm really looking forward to this week, and if it happens, great. But I also know I'm a little ahead of the curve in the building."

That's mainly because his hook has found friction more often than not in key moments. To chalk it up simply to luck, though, is not doing his game justice.

He scouts a bowling alley the way a race car driver might walk a track the morning of a race. He does it in part by rolling balls on as many lanes as possible, and in part by watching others do the same.

The PBA oil pattern for the lanes, which varies event to event, sets the edges of the hook zones. The trick for the 64 pros who will roll 14 games over two sessions today is to find the edges so they can be among the 30 who advance to Friday.

"One of the things about this place, because of the break between lanes eight and nine over there, there's a lot of the pairs of lanes that play a little bit different," Barnes said. "That probably plays a little bit into my strength of being able to move the ball around a little more, the versatility to be able to change speeds and releases, hopefully a little bit quicker.

"Now there are so many young guys that have more rev rate (on the ball) and are so super talented, I have to survive a different way out here than when I first came out."

Barnes, the 2008 PBA Bowler of the Year, has 12 career wins. But he's been in contention for many others for one good reason, according to the editors of TenpinBowling.org: "Due to his skill and mentality, Barnes is a hard nut to crack and feared by every opponent."

Barnes doesn't seem devious, but he is always seeking the edge.

"I am a student of the game," Barnes said. "I've been around a lot of really good coaches who have taught me a lot of different things.

"And the players I've always respected the most are the ones who, generally speaking, are considered the more versatile and more intelligent. Guys like Walter Ray Williams (who at 50 is this year's points leader), Norm Duke, or Brian Voss - guys who can do all these different things on a lane."

Grip it and rip it has never been his style. Or as he put it, "That whole 'Get in the zone and go numb' thing, that doesn't fit my personality."

tmay@dispatch.com
Forum: General bowling discussion

Biggest collapses

I posted a humiliating finish to a set of mine over in the 'scores' forum, but I thought it might be interesting to hear from the board on what your biggest collapse, or even improvement, is in any game in a three game set you've bowled recently. I know that, for me personally last night, it felt like, starting the last game, I had my right hand around my throat, and I was trying to throw the ball with a 'catchers mitt' on my left.

It was ugly!

Forum: General bowling discussion

Saginaw Valley State's Bill O'Neill defeats defending champ in bowling's U.S. Open

BY MATT FIORITO, DETROIT FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Bill O'Neill took a huge step Sunday toward fulfilling the can't-miss label laid upon him when he first joined the Pro Bowlers Association tour and was rookie of the year in the 2005-06 season.

O'Neill, a four-time first team All-America at Saginaw Vallley State, earned his first major title Sunday at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis, winning the PBA's Lumber Liquidators 67th U.S. Open with a 267-207 victory over defending champion Mike Scroggins. O'Neill earned $60,000, the biggest purse of his career, and was rewarded with a three-year exemption on the PBA Tour.

O'Neill, the second seed advanced to the title match with a 203-152 victory over Tommy Jones, with both players apparently puzzled by the lane condition.

O'Neil's struggles continued in the first two frames against Scroggins as he spared the first frame, and then missed a split conversion in the second frame. But after that, he caught fire and blazed off the scoring sheet with 10 consecutive strikes.

This title means everything to me. I cant begin to explain it, he said. Its the most difficult title on tour to win. To have my name up there will the guys who have won it is amazing.

I cant believe I bowled a game like that on this lane condition, the 28-year-old ONeill said. I found a little hold area and thats all I needed. It was just a matter of bearing down and making good shots.

It was the most relaxed Ive ever been on TV, he continued. I dont know why, but from the time I got up this morning and came into the center, everything felt great. Even after throwing that split in the second frame, I knew I was going to throw the ball great.

Scroggins has beaten me, like, the last 34 times Ive bowled him, so it was nice to get some payback.

It was the second title of the season for O'Neill, who won his first career title, the Chameleon Championship at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park in September.

Five years ago, O'Neill finished sixth in the U.S. Open as an amateur and then joined the PBA the next week.
In addition to his All-America status in coach Dan Dorion's top-of-the-line program at Saginaw Valley State, O'Neill was a three-time Bowling Writers Association of America Collegiate Bowler of the Year (2001, 03, 04) and the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Most Valuable Player in 2002-03 and 2003-04

Read Matt's bowling blog at: http://freep.com/section/blog35

Forum: General bowling discussion

PBA official says tour could return to NWI

BY STEVE T. GORCHES, (219) 648-3141 OR SGORCHES@POST-TRIB.COM, BLOGS.POST-TRIB.COM/GORCHES

INDIANAPOLIS -- So will the Professional Bowlers Association regular tour be returning to Northwest Indiana after a successful four-year run from 2005 to 2008?

On Sunday after the finals of the 67th PBA U.S. Open, vice president and director of the PBA Tour, Kirk Von Krueger said it's not out of the realm of possibility.

"We're still working on our schedule," he said. "It's a work in progress."

The tour held four regular stops in the region at three different centers -- Stardust Bowl I in Hammond, which has since closed, Stardust II in Hobart and Olympia Lanes in Hammond last season. The region didn't host an event this year due to the World Series of Bowling (WSOB) taking away multiple tour stops.

The WSOB was a five-week endeavor to start the season held in the Detroit metro area with multiple tourneys being held. The result was a few loyal host centers not being able to hold events, including Olympia Lanes and Hawthorn Lanes in Vernon Hills, Ill.

"I got an e-mail from (South Shore Sports director) Jason Sands and I told him if there's a way to do it, I'd love to make it possible. (Northwest Indiana) is a great place for bowling and I'd love to go back."

* Fine with unassuming: As Sunday's ESPN telecast started and the announcers Rob Stone and Randy Pedersen listed the finalists, they used a pair of monickers to describe tournament leader and eventual runner-up Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas.

"Captain of the all-anonymous team," Stone said.

"Unassuming," Pedersen added.

Those sound like boring descriptions to be associated with, but the ordinary looking Scroggins is OK with that.

"I'm always the underdog going into matches," the two-time major champion said. "I thrive on that. It helps me sneak up on everybody."

* Local shout out: One of the region's high school bowlers made a sign as a shout out to a friend.

Portage High School bowler David Wilson held up a sign saying, "Happy Birthday Craig Summers -- No. 21" referring to a former Portage High team member.

* Technical difficulties: Every league bowler has dealt with lanes breaking down at times. It happens at PBA host centers, too.

Just one frame into the first match between Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., and Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., the right lane broke down with pins falling from the pinsetter. Jones was going up for a shot on the left lane, but had to wait for the problem to be fixed.

Couch joked with Jones, "They're scared of me already boss."

Forum: General bowling discussion

Norwich alley hopes to strike chord with PBA

The 2010 Go RVing Match Play Championship will be the third annual held at the Norwichtown facility.

Were looking to go the extra mile, Larsen said during a kickoff press conference at the bowling alley Tuesday afternoon.

Even though Norwich Bowling has to pay the tour $27,500 to host the tournament and the alley loses about a week of business, the owners and community leaders want to keep the event.

Its a wonderful thing for our city, Alderman Deb Hinchey said from the audience during the conference. Its something that makes us proud.

At 32 lanes, Norwich Bowling is the smallest house on the PBA tour. But what the alley lacks in size it makes for up in personal service, organizers said.

Norwich Board of Education Chairman Charles Jaskiewicz and wife Patrice will again head of the volunteers committee. The couple expects to be supervising 168 workers.

Charles Jaskiewicz sees the bowling event and the expansion of Kelly Middle Schools auditorium as venues for widely promoting Norwich and Eastern Connecticut while boosting business at local taverns, restaurants, and hotels during the tourney. Fontaine and Larsen say the tourney has a positive carryover, increasing interest in bowling.

The March 21 final will be shown live on the ESPN cable sports channel. Last years final had a U.S. audience of about 1 million, Fontaine said.

Interest is building in the March 17-21 tournament with spots in the pro-am portion expected to sell out for the first time this year, Fontaine said.

Unique features to this years tournament, which offers a first prize of $25,000, include seven spots reserved for local bowlers in the field of 64 and a bracket system similar to that used in the NCAA college basketball tournaments. Two different oil patterns will be used on the lanes, increasing the degree of difficulty.

The tournament also begins on St. Patricks Day, creating more opportunities for collaborations with bars and in the centers own kitchen.

Yes, if you were wondering, the green beer will be here, Jaskiewicz said.

Forum: General bowling discussion
